Meredith & Piper opening the Dog Desk Radio winners goody bag with Mum This is what Meredith had to say when we interviewed her My name is Meredith and I am 4 years old. I think I’m a Staffy but my mums call me their ‘little orange piglet’ so I’m not completely sure. I live with my 2 mums, my person sister Emmy and my dog sister Piper. I love eating (peanut butter and carrots are my favourite snacks), getting belly rubs from my people, playing ball and chase with Piper at the dog paddocks and snuggling up on the sofa to watch tv shows - The Supervet, Dog Rescuers and that advert with the singing dog are my favourite things to watch! I was an only dog until 2 years ago when we went to the local dog rescue centre and met Piper. She had been rescued by some wonderful ladies from Sirius Animal Rescue in Romania, when they found her and her brothers and sisters tied up in a bag and thrown away in a ditch. They were only a few days old!! Piper came to the UK but didn’t get picked by any of the families that went to meet her because she was so shy and scared of everyone. Luckily I knew exactly how to make her feel safe and happy, and after running around in circles together in the field and getting treats from my mums every time we ran back to them, Piper decided she liked us all and came home to join our family. Sirius Animal Rescue a non profit organisation founded in 2017. Providing care for animals in need in Romania. Meredith's nominated charity. Of course Sirius Animal Rescue were delighted with their win & wanted to introduce themselves to you. Here is what they had to say We are a non profit organisation based in Cluj-Napoca Romania and made up of people with a love for life and a love for animals. Our teams both in Romania and the U.K. work as one, one mind, one heart...together. We aspire to change the world, one step at a time. Big dreams? Why not aim for the moon, as if we fall, we fall amongst the stars. This brings us to our name, Sirius. Sirius is the brightest star in the sky. Historically there has been a significance attached to this star, particularly in relation to dogs. It is often called the Dog Star. Here’s where we begin. Our main activities revolve around rescuing animals, focusing on dogs. We take them from the streets and rehabilitate, treat them for illness and care for them until we are able to re-home them. Most do find their forever families, some will forever be our family and remain with us at Sirius. For these special family members we would love a sanctuary, a space to call their own, their Sirius-ly happy home. Rescuing goes a long way to aiding the problem we have with animals living on the streets. However we want to make a bigger impact, reduce the numbers and start and turn the wheel of change. We proudly head up our Spay and Neuter Campaign. All our rescues undergo this treatment and we hold a clinic to allow local people to bring animals, sometimes their pets to be spayed or neutered, funded by ourselves. We see this as responsible ownership, being accountable and taking the right steps toward minimising the problem. Education is key for us, we believe that teaching people the right ways to care for their animal will inevitably keep change in motion. We hold volunteer days at our pit stops so local people may come, meet the team, dogs and cats and learn from us. The bigger dream. Developing our two veterinary clinics to be able to provide care to local rural communities and for those who may not normally be able to seek the right help, for whatever reason. Over the last 3 years we have been flying our flag and been fortunate enough to re home in excess of 600 dogs. The last couple of months have been new to us, on our own we have grown. We have been finding our way on what can sometimes be a difficult path. We have done so with such dedicated support from our followers on social media, fundraisers, foster families, partner centres, adopters and the list doesn’t end there. As many of our followers and dog owners know, once a part of Sirius, you are a part of our family. The love and support is always there and together we will make those dreams a reality. Filling up the pool to keep the dogs cool The United Kingdom has it's fair share of animals in need that's certain. But life for a dog in Eastern Europe can be extremely short & harsh.
Victims of human conflict & abandonment many die from lack of nourishment, dehydration, untreated disease, accidents & deliberate attacks from humans. Romania does not have the vast armies of people ready & willing to help dogs in need that exists in the UK. Here at Dog Desk Radio we believe that every dog deserves a chance at life & we support overseas aid to support organisations on the ground like Sirius Animal Rescue. Spay & neuter programmes & education are vital in reducing the number of stray animals in Romania. The eradication of dogs by shooting hanging poisoning and bludgeoning is not only barbaric it is ineffective. As dogs are removed from an area others arrive to take their place, as territories are left unchallenged. Look out for our interview with photographer, film maker & trustee of Saving Suffering Strays Maria Slough who talks to us about her dog Ozzy a former resident of the infamous Praca shelter. Believed to have cleaned it's act up it has been described in the past as the place dog catchers take dogs to die.
